1The Finding

MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) is the only major IPL venue where batting first wins more often: 55.1% bat-first rate across 89 matches, 12 seasons.

3Why It's Surprising

At every other major IPL venue, chasing wins more often. Chepauk uniquely reverses the trend — the only venue in the major list where batting first gives a genuine statistical edge. Captains seem to half-know this: 53.9% elect to bat here, versus just 34.5% league-wide. When they do, they win 56.3% of the time. The slow, turning pitch at Chepauk tends to deteriorate across the match — batting second becomes progressively harder. The data reflects what experienced Chennai pitch-readers have long said.
