Summary

The first six overs set the terms of a T20 innings — but how decisive are they, really? We compared each team's powerplay score (overs 1–6) with the match result across every decided IPL 2026 match. The team that scored more in its powerplay won 65.7% of the time — a two-thirds edge from the first six overs alone.

The number

Decided matches with a powerplay winner 70 (3 further matches tied on powerplay runs)
Team with the higher powerplay score won 46 of 70 — 65.7%

In IPL 2026, the team that out-scored its opponent in the powerplay won 65.7% of matches — a near two-to-one advantage decided in the first six overs.

The read

A 65.7% conversion is strong but not deterministic — one match in three was won by the side that lost the powerplay, which is the space where middle-overs control and death hitting earn their keep. But the signal is clear: the powerplay is the single most leveraged phase for setting up a win. For a batting side it argues for front-loading intent; for a bowling side it reframes the powerplay as not merely containment but the phase most likely to decide the result.

Note the powerplay score folds both innings' contexts together — a first-innings side building a total and a chasing side attacking a target. The 65.7% holds across both; a deeper split by innings and by bat-first/chase is a natural follow-up.
