Summary

Royal Challengers Bengaluru chased down Gujarat Titans to win the 2026 IPL — 151 to get, knocked off for the loss of five with two overs to spare. The scorecard records the result; it does not show where the match was decided. This pressure map reconstructs the chase delivery by delivery, tracking the required run rate and the wickets that moved it, to locate the moments that actually settled the final. The headline: RCB's chase was won in its first four overs, and the pressure that followed was about wickets, never about the rate.

Method note. This is the descriptive pressure map: pressure is read from the required run rate (runs still needed ÷ balls remaining) and the fall of wickets — quantities that trace directly to the ball-by-ball record, no model involved. A model-derived version — true win-probability swings from the Krithin Engine — is a planned upgrade once the model-provenance doctrine (§3.3-model) is ratified and the model card published.

The target

Gujarat Titans posted 150/8, leaving RCB 151 to win at 7.5 an over — a gettable but not trivial target on a final's nerves.

The chase, by pressure point

Where the final was won

Pressure point 1 — the front-loaded start (overs 1–4). RCB came out swinging and took the required rate below the par line almost immediately: 61 without loss after 4.2 overs dropped the rate to 5.7, well under the 7.5 they started on. This is the single most important stretch of the match. By banking runs early against a modest target, RCB bought themselves insurance that meant no later wicket could truly spike the rate.

Pressure point 2 — the double-strikes that didn't bite (overs 4–5, 8). The Titans struck in pairs — Venkatesh Iyer and Padikkal in the space of five balls (61/0 → 62/2), then Patidar and Krunal (87/3 → 89/4). On a different night, four wickets down would be a crisis. Here it wasn't: even at 89/4, RCB needed only 62 off 67 — a required rate of 5.6, below the asking rate they started with. The wickets threatened the result on paper but never on the scoreboard, because the early surplus absorbed them. This is the quiet truth of the final: the pressure was psychological, not mathematical.

Pressure point 3 — Tim David's release (over 12). With RCB four down and the Titans one more strike from a real opening, Tim David's six in the 12th over pushed the equation to 30 off 45 — a required rate of 4.0, and effectively closed the contest. It is the clearest turning point: the one passage where the chase went from "live" to "done."

The finish. Kohli, there at the start and the end, sealed it with a six in the 18th over — the winning runs with 12 balls to spare.

The read

The 2026 final was decided by a chase strategy, not a collapse or a comeback: get ahead of the rate early against a chaseable total, and let wickets come without panic. The required rate tells the story the wicket column hides — RCB were never behind it after the fourth over. For all the Titans' four strikes, the pressure map shows a chase that was mathematically comfortable almost throughout, punctuated by one decisive release in the 12th. The pressure in the 2026 final was real, but it lived in the dugout, not in the equation.
